Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Prescriber Information

Overview – This site provides a large amount of information on the basics of opioids, overdose prevention, information for both patients and providers as well as the data that explains the science and reality of the current state of opioids in the US nationwide and within the individual states. The provider tab, specifically, gives recommendations that focus on clinical practice and provide evidence and guidance to improve how these drugs are prescribed to promote patient care.

Highlights – Resources relating to the CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain US (2016). Which article addresses both the research and recommendations on the issue to help inform prescribing clinicians:

• When to initiate or continue opioids for chronic pain:
• Opioid selection, dosage, duration, follow-up and discontinuation; and
• Assessing risk and addressing harms of opioid use.
